DTF vs Screen Printing vs DTG vs Sublimation: Which Printing Method Should You Choose?
Time:Oct 13, 2026

When customers search for custom apparel printing, one common question is: “Should I choose DTF, screen printing, DTG, or sublimation?” The short answer is simple: DTF is often the most flexible option for small batches, full-color designs, fast turnaround, and multiple fabric types. Screen printing is strong for large-volume simple designs. DTG works well for detailed prints on cotton. Sublimation is best for light-colored polyester.

Why choosing the right method matters

Most customers do not care about printing technology by itself. They care about whether the design looks sharp, lasts through washing, feels comfortable, ships quickly, and fits the budget. Each printing method has different strengths, so choosing the wrong one can lead to unnecessary cost, slower production, or disappointing results.

When DTF is a good choice

DTF, or Direct to Film, prints the design onto PET film and then transfers it to the garment with heat. Its biggest advantage is fabric flexibility. DTF can be used on cotton, polyester, blends, hoodies, tote bags, workwear, and many other products.

It is especially useful for full-color artwork, small-batch orders, personalized names and numbers, event apparel, and brand merchandise. Because DTF does not require a separate screen for each color, it is more friendly to colorful artwork and short runs than traditional screen printing.

When screen printing is a good choice

Screen printing is ideal for large-volume orders with simple artwork and limited colors. It requires setup, screens, and more preparation, but once the order quantity is high enough, the cost per piece can become very competitive.

If you need hundreds or thousands of the same design, screen printing may be the better choice. But if your order includes many different names, numbers, sizes, or color variations, DTF is usually more flexible.

When DTG is a good choice

DTG, or Direct to Garment, prints directly onto the fabric. It can work well for photo-style artwork, gradients, and small runs on cotton garments. DTG often has a soft feel, but it is more fabric-dependent. Dark garments may require pretreatment, which adds another step to the workflow.

If you want to print on many different garment types, including blends, hoodies, bags, or performance apparel, DTF may be easier to manage.

When sublimation is a good choice

Sublimation is best for light-colored polyester or polyester-coated products. It is commonly used for sportswear, jerseys, flags, and coated hard goods. The print has almost no hand feel because the dye becomes part of the material.

However, sublimation is not suitable for dark cotton shirts or most natural fabrics. If you want full-color artwork on black cotton or blended hoodies, DTF is usually the more practical option.
